Amigrante.org was founded by Mauricio Velasco, a systems engineer with a deep passion for driving meaningful change through innovative technology. With over eight years of experience as a case manager in immigration shelters, Jose witnessed firsthand the critical challenges in delivering social services, including inefficiencies, inequities, and security vulnerabilities within shelter systems. These experiences laid the foundation for Amigrante.org and its mission to modernize social services through advanced digital solutions.
Before founding Amigrante.org, Mauricio Velasco dedicated over eight years of his career to working as a case manager in various immigration shelters across Chicago, Illinois. This experience gave him firsthand insight into the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and the systemic inefficiencies within shelter systems.
As a case manager, Jose developed a deep understanding of:
Family Reunification Programs: He facilitated the reunification of undocumented minors with their families, ensuring compliance with legal and procedural requirements.
Resource Coordination: He worked to connect shelter residents with critical resources, including housing, healthcare, legal services, and employment assistance.
Immigration Processes: Jose guided migrants through complex legal systems, providing support for asylum applications, visa processes, and temporary protective status.
Advocacy and Support: He served as an advocate for residents, addressing their immediate needs while helping them navigate their paths toward stability and independence.
During his tenure, encountered systemic issues that hindered the effectiveness of social service programs, such as:
Inefficient data management processes.
Mishandling of sensitive resident information.
Fraudulent claims and misuse of resources.
Lack of comprehensive training and tools for case managers to perform their roles effectively.
These challenges inspired him to envision a better way to manage shelter operations and deliver social services.
Mauricio’s extensive experience as a case manager became the foundation for Amigrante.org and its flagship platform, ImmiTracking. He combined his expertise in systems engineering with his on-the-ground knowledge of shelter operations to create a solution that addresses the very problems he encountered during his career.
work as a case manager not only shaped his professional journey but also gave him a profound appreciation for the resilience of the individuals and families he served. This legacy of service continues to inspire Amigrante.org’s mission to transform social services, empower case managers, and deliver equitable support to vulnerable communities.
Amigrante.org is committed to creating a safer, fairer, and more accountable shelter system for everyone involved.
